In the novel Eli witnesses many sons mistreating their father's. First with the pipel and how he abused his father, later with the after he comes to the idea about why the Rabbi's son leaves him while running, and third when they are on the train to Buchenwald when the son beats his father to death over just a little bite of food. Eli prays to have the strength to never do this to his father. Eli at one point says ”My father’s presence was the only thing that stopped me from allowing myself to die. . . . I had no right to let myself die. What would he do without me? I was his only support.” this shows that Elie's love for his father is great than the will to just care about himself and forget about his father.
