Theme: Eliezer’s Struggle to Maintain Faith in a Benevolent God
Photo From: infoniac
This photo helps explain Eliezer's struggle to keep his faith in god after everything that happens to everyone in the concentration camp. Before his family and everyone is sent to the camps the book shows him having a great amount of faith in god. He could never picture living without his faith in god. After they are taken away his faith it tested. He wonders why if god is so great why he lets this happen to them. He sees the selfishness, cruelty, and evil there is in everyone even himself. He sees the world as being disgusting and thinks maybe god is disgusting or doesn't even exists. But Eli doesn't lose all his faith he sometimes asks about good and evil and if god exists. Just asking that shows that he still has some faith that maybe god does exists.

Theme: Silence
Photo From:.amazonaws
One of the ways silence is represented in the novel is by the silence of the victims how all of them took the blows with out, and when Elie's father is beaten Eli watches and doesn't do anything to help his father all he does is watch in silence. Another way silence is represented in the novel is by gods lack of response. Eli takes this as god's lack of caring and this hurts his faith a lot in the novel.

Theme:Inhumanity Toward Other Humans

The Nazi’s where not the only ones showing cruelty Elie saw it from himself and other prisoners and what they did to each other. In these camps he realizes how terrible people can be to another. In the novel it shows how cruelty spreads. Instead of helping one another in times like this they the responded by turning against one another. The cruelty of the Holocaust spread fro it to its victims. This showed that in times when their life is at stake they would rather turn on someone than to die.

Theme: The Importnace of Father-Son Bonds
Photo From: frogview
In the novel Eli witnesses many sons mistreating their father's. First with the pipel and how he abused his father, later with the after he comes to the idea about why the Rabbi's son leaves him while running, and third when they are on the train to Buchenwald when the son beats his father to death over just a little bite of food. Eli prays to have the strength to never do this to his father. Eli at one point says ”My father’s presence was the only thing that stopped me from allowing myself to die. . . . I had no right to let myself die. What would he do without me? I was his only support.” this shows that Elie's love for his father is great than the will to just care about himself and forget about his father.

Symbol night

Almost everything bad that happens to Eli and his father happend at night. They were bought to the first camp Birkenau and Auschwitz at night and they witnessed the horrible sight of a truck load of children being thrown into a fiery ditch alive as their flaming corpses lit up the night sky. When they have to go to the next camp Buna it is pitch dark when they start the run towards the camp. Night also stands for the darkness of his soul. Eli felt that his heart was darkened from all the cruelty and evilness around him. Instead of concentrating on his faith in god he lets that dwindle and only focuses on warmth, food, and rest.
